16th Sunday in Ordinary Time Mk 6/30-34

Background:

Sometimes we tend to think that Jesus’s public life was a stage-play, that he went through the motions of trying to win people to his message of God’s all merciful love which we are supposed to reflect in our lives. He knew that he was going to fail, and that he would die in the end. In fact, while he certainly knew that there was enormous risk in what he was doing, he also hoped that he would succeed (which made his final disappointment all the more bitter). His public ministry began with great promise of success. The people around him were enthusiastic, his immediate followers were effective in preparing the way for him. It looked like he might win over many of his fellow country men. Yet to a considerable extent they misunderstood him, even those closest to him. They still expected a material kingdom. 00spc.gif (820 bytes) Story:

A seventh grade girls volleyball team began the season with a bang. In their first three games they beat the best three teams in their league. They began to smell the championship. Their captain said to them, if we really practice a lot and work hard at it, and take the game very seriously, I think we WILL win.So they did practice and they did work hard and they were very serious for maybe three more weeks. But you know what it’s like to be a seventh grad girl. You have to listen to records, and go the movies, and talk about boys and hang out at the fashionable places to hang out (like malls and things and wherever the boys hang out) and especially talk on the telephone. Anyway they won two more games so they figure it would be easy to end up as champs. Then they lost a game to the worst team in the league because they were overconfident. So their practices began to slip, a lot of kids didn’t even bother to show up, the boys became a more serious problem (as they always do when you’re in seventh grade), and they simply had to spend a lot more time on the phone. Well, they did get to the finals and the other team really skunked them. I thought you said we were going to be champs they said to their captain. I never said it would be easy, she said.
