BESTSELLING AUTHOR ANDREW M. GREELEY AND DR. MARY G. DURKIN PRESENT AN INSPIRATIONAL VOLUME CELEBRATING THE GREATEST OF ALL VIRTUES: LOVE

Father Andrew M. Greeley and his sister, Dr. Mary G. Durkin, write in the Foreword to their inspirational volume, THE BOOK OF LOVE: A Treasury Inspired by the Greatest of Virtues (Forge Books; $25.95; November 28, 2002), "Love in, its very nature is passionate, forceful, determined, enraptured....Love is not just hearts and flowers and St. Valentine's Day lace. Love is essentially a raging torrent rushing inexorably towards union."

Humans are unique in their ability to embrace a wide variety of loves because they have such a powerful capacity to bond. Man's capability to engage, in passionate sexual bonding makes different types of love possible, and is the result of our vast, amorphous, and desperate need to connect. Saint Paul once wrote that love is the greatest virtue, of all, and the human desire to understand what love is all about is a virtuous, and necessary, quest affair of the soul.

Andrew M. Greeley and Mary G. Durkin created THE BOOK OF LOVE with the intention of gathering works that would nourish an appreciation of the possibilities and challenges of love. The authors of the works included in this uplifting volume invite readers to enter their imaginations and allow their images of love to weave their way through their spirits and souls.

THE BOOK OF LOVE is a hands-on collection of the reflection of love and presents a for a celebration of human love to be shared with family and friends. Between the pages of it's inspirational anthology, readers may discover the many kinds of love, and the many ways that love has been explored - from divine love to human love, the love between a man and a woman, family and friends, countries, and places. Divided into sections pertaining to the different types of human love, THE BOOK OF LOVE examines

00spc.gif (820 bytes) Some selections in THE BOOK OF LOVE seem to give obvious answers to the question of love's meaning. Others are more obscure. Some are old favorites, perhaps seen in a new light. None, standing alone, supply the exact road map for the exploration of a deeper appreciation of love, but all invite meditation as a way of opening the spirit to a fuller awareness of love. Examples of the many works that explore love, include: poetry, folklore, sayings, music, children's stories, classic stories, stories from religious traditions, and autobiographical reflections, both published and unpublished. There are stories from the Islamic, Judaic, and Christian faiths, and tales from different cultures around the world. Some of the selections that can be found in THE BOOK OF LOVE, include:
"When Love is Kind" - Thomas Moore
"To His Love" - William Shakespeare
"The Gift of the Magi" - 0. Henry
"Marwe in the Underworld" - Kenyan folk tale
"Children" - from "The Prophet" by Kablil Gibran
"Remember" - Christina Georgina Rossetti
"The Divine Comedy: Canto 5" - Dante Alighieri
"The Lord our Shepard" - Psalms 23:1-6
"America the Beautiful"
"Hiawatha’s Childhood" - Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

The ability to love wisely and well is one of the most important traits parents can pass on to their children, and Andrew Greeley and Mary Durkin hope this exploration of love will encourage readers to recall their own favorite love stories and share them with those they love. Uplifting, inspirational, and truly captivating, THE BOOK OF LOVE: A Treasure Inspired by the Greatest of Virtues, is a veritable wealth of human wisdom that will not only enlighten, but entertain as well.
